Mahua Mukhopadhyay, Ph.D., joined DBCAB in 2008. Her research experience focuses on early embryonic development, organogenesis, and stem cell biology. As a program officer for the branch, she is responsible for administering research programs on biophysical/mechanical aspects of embryonic development, early embryonic development, regenerative biology, and stem cell biology. She also coordinates NICHD’s initiatives on biophysical and biomechanical aspects of embryonic development, the Academic Research Enhancement Awards R15 program on developmental biology, and the phenotyping of embryonic lethal mutant mouse lines generated through the NIH Knockout Mouse Phenotyping Program.

Dr. Mukhopadhyay chairs NICHD’s stem cell interest group that coordinates NICHD- and NIH-wide stem cell initiatives. She serves on several institute working groups and represents NICHD on multiple NIH working groups responsible for coordinating administrative duties across NIH. She also serves on several NIH-wide initiatives, including the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies Initiative, the Common Fund's cellular senescence initiative, and the Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Research Program.

Dr. Mukhopadhyay received her doctorate degree in biology from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, where she studied development of neuronal connectivity using the Drosophila visual system as a model. During her postdoctoral studies at NICHD’s Laboratory of Mammalian Genes and Development, she acquired extensive knowledge in mammalian embryonic development using the powerful tool of mouse genetics. She has received several NIH and NICHD awards recognizing her contribution in science administration and work-life balance activities.
