- Natural History Study of Patients with Excess Androgen
This protocol performs a comprehensive clinical and genetic evaluation of patients with androgen excess, including CAH. Data is being collected in a large cohort of patients regarding growth and development, hormonal and metabolic factors and psychological characteristics. This protocol will allow investigators to compare patients with androgen excess of different causes, identify hormone-mediated and disease-specific characterizations, and allow the investigators to acquire further knowledge for use in the design of future treatments.
- Effect of Metformin on Sensitivity of the GnRH Pulse Generator to Suppression by Estradiol and Progesterone in Hyperandrogenemic Adolescent Girls
Many, but not all, girls with high androgen levels go on to develop polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) as adults. Women with PCOS often have irregular menstrual periods, excess facial and body hair, and weight gain. It is not clear why some girls later develop PCOS and others do not. In an earlier study, some girls with high levels of androgens had abnormalities in another hormone (called LH) that are often seen in women with PCOS. The girls with abnormal LH secretion had higher levels of insulin than the girls with normal LH secretion. The current trial is testing whether metformin, an insulin-sensitizing agent, changes the effects of high androgen levels in adolescent girls by looking at their LH secretion response following metformin treatment.
