Biosketch

Steven C. Kaufman, M.D., is a medical officer for NICHD’s Contraception Research Branch (CRB). He has served as the project officer for most of CRB’s investigator-initiated grants since 1992, providing guidance to grant applicants and branch staff about the application and review process as well as managing awarded grants. He also is the project officer for the Women's Reproductive Health Research (WRHR) Career Development Program and served as the project officer for contracts focused on male condoms, vasectomy, tubal sterilization, fertility drugs, and peri/postmenopausal gonadotropin levels.

Dr. Kaufman also served as medical officer for a joint NICHD/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease cooperative agreement dealing with microbicide development. Since 2007, he has been NICHD’s liaison to the NIH Division of Loan Repayment, handling 200–300 applications each year. Prior to joining CRB, he worked for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and the National Eye Institute's Clinical Trials Branch.

Dr. Kaufman earned his medical degree at Albany Medical College and his master’s degree in statistics with an emphasis in biostatistics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
