BBB Collaborative Research: Eating Behaviors and Diabetes Management

Healthy diets are associated with reduced risk of certain cancers—such as stomach, breast, and colorectal—and other chronic diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).

BBB collaborates with the Social and Behavioral Sciences Branch (SBSB) on three of its studies focused on the importance of healthy diets:

  • Cultivating Healthy Environments in Families with T1DM (CHEF): For children with T1DM and their families, improving diet quality has the potential to improve their short- and long-term health outcomes. CHEF is a randomized, controlled trial that tests the effectiveness of a family-based behavioral intervention designed to improve diet quality and adherence.
  • Family Management of Childhood Diabetes (FMOD) study: Children who learn to manage the affective, behavioral, and cognitive demands of their T1DM early in their lives may avoid many of the long-term risks in adulthood. The FMOD study examines the long-term effects of improving parent-child teamwork in the management of the child’s T1DM.
  • Pregnancy Eating Attributes Study (PEAS): In recognition of the critical public health need to improve approaches to promote healthful eating behaviors, PEAS research focuses on neurobehavioral influences on eating behaviors at critical developmental periods.
