Dr. Gilman is senior investigator and SBSB Chief. His research focuses on the developmental origins of socioeconomic and race/ethnic disparities in common mental disorders including mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders. The overarching aim of this research is to understand how developmental processes contribute to social inequalities in mental illness during childhood, into adulthood, and in successive generations. Dr. Gilman is currently conducting studies focusing on the influences of social and environmental factors during the prenatal period on children’s neurodevelopment, as well as the role of developmental factors in suicide risk over the lifespan.
Prior to joining NICHD in 2015, Dr. Gilman served on the faculty of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in the departments of Social & Behavioral Sciences and Epidemiology. He received his bachelor's degree in social psychology from Tufts University and master's and doctoral degrees in health and social behavior from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He received postdoctoral training in behavioral medicine at Brown University Medical School.
