Podcast on Women’s Health: Where We’ve Been, Where We’re Going

Dr. Guttmacher and Dr. Clayton

NICHD Director Dr. Alan Guttmacher sat down recently with Dr. Janine Clayton, Director of NIH’s Office of Research on Women’s Health, to discuss advances in women’s health research and possible future directions.

The two discussed a wide variety of topics relevant to women’s health, from gynecologic disease to gestational diabetes, cardiovascular health to vision problems, and many more. They also talked about joint investments in training and career development to support the next generation of women’s health researchers.

In addition, Dr. Clayton emphasized, more generally, the importance of research on sex differences:

Studying sex and gender, and the similarities and differences in sex and gender, is a fundamental aspect to conducting good science and to practicing good medicine. . . . Ultimately, sex and gender analyses—looking at the differences comparing males and females, contrasting the findings—can provide critical insights about both biologic processes and our understanding of health in women’s health and in men’s health. It really is not just a women’s issue. It’s a human health issue.
