Research Project Grant

• Supports investigator-initiated research projects on a topic within the areas of research supported by NICHD.

Small Research Grant

• Supports small investigator-initiated research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources on a topic within the areas of research supported by NICHD.
• Examples include pilot or feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology and/or development of new research technology.

Conference Grant

• Provides limited support for scientific meetings, workshops, symposia, and conferences within the areas of research supported by NICHD.

• In the cover letter, applicants should request secondary assignments from other NIH institutes with programmatic interest in the conference.
• In general, NICHD awards up to $10,000 for grants with primary assignment to NICHD and up to $5,000 for grants with secondary assignment to NICHD.

NIH Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA)

• Supports small research projects at colleges, universities and health professional schools that have not received significant NIH funding.
• Eligibility is limited.
• Provides an opportunity for faculty at these schools to introduce undergraduates to research.

Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Award

• Provides limited support for exploratory/developmental research projects that introduce novel scientific ideas, model systems, tools, agents, targets, and/or technologies.
• High-risk/high-payoff research is encouraged.
• Preliminary data is helpful but not required.

Resource-Related Research Projects

• Provides research infrastructure support.
• NICHD does not accept unsolicited R24 applications at this time.

Research Education Programs

• Provides support for short-term research education programs to improve the knowledge and skills of investigators conducting research on reproductive, developmental, behavioral, social, and rehabilitative processes that determine the health and well-being of newborns, infants, children, adults, families, and populations.

NIH Clinical Trial Planning Grant Program

• At present, NICHD does not accept R34 applications.
• R34s support the planning of Phase III clinical trials, including activities that establish the research team, develop tools for data management, and finalize the protocol.
• The Parent R34 Announcement (PA-09-186) expired and has not been re-issued.

Program Project Grant

• Encourages multidisciplinary investigation of a complex problem relevant to NICHD's mission.
• Consist of at least three interrelated projects and, often, core resources.
• Synergy among the projects should result in greater scientific contributions than if each project were supported separately.
• NICHD is currently limiting P01 applications to those for specific high-priority areas.

Research Project Cooperative Agreement

• Similar to an R01, but involves NICHD program staff in a substantial scientific and management role.
• NICHD accepts U01 applications only in response to active RFAs. Check Active Funding Opportunity Announcements for active U01 RFAs.

Cooperative Clinical Research Agreement

• Supports clinical evaluation of methods of therapy and/or prevention using a cooperative agreement.
• NICHD accepts U10 applications only in response to active RFAs. Check Active Funding Opportunity Announcements for active U10 RFAs.

Cooperative Conference Grant/Conference Grant

• Similar to an R13, but involves NICHD program staff in a substantial scientific and management role.
• Provides limited support for scientific meetings, workshops, symposia, and conferences within areas of research supported by NICHD.
