This 80-page scientific plan outlines Down syndrome research goals and objectives for the NIH Institutes, including the NICHD, which support and conduct research related to Down syndrome and its associated disorders. The plan was developed by the NIH Down Syndrome Working Group, which includes representatives from 11 NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices, consulted with the scientific, family, and advocacy communities in drafting this plan; a public comment period helped to further define the plan. The National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research (NCMRR) within the NICHD led the development of this trans-NIH research plan on rehabilitation. This 5-year plan lays out priorities in medical rehabilitation research that will guide NIH support for rehabilitation medicine and will benefit individuals with temporary or chronic limitations in physical, cognitive, or sensory function that require rehabilitation.

This 32-page research plan lays out a scientific agenda for the NIH to conduct and gather rigorous scientific evidence needed to answer questions and fill in knowledge gaps about vulvodynia, as of 2012. The agenda builds upon ongoing vulvodynia research (supported by the NICHD, NIH, and other agencies and organizations) and aims to advance the field by enhancing capacity for conducting research related to vulvodynia. This 44-page plan identifies priorities for NIH research activities on three conditions known to be associated with the FMR1 gene: Fragile X syndrome, Fragile X-associated Tremor and Ataxia Syndrome, and Fragile X-associated Primary Ovarian Insufficiency. It also describes research directions on the FMR1 gene itself, mutations that affect the gene’s function, and the role of the FMR1 protein in the development and progression of these conditions. It was developed over several years and incorporates input from scientists, healthcare providers, and support organizations with an interest in FMR1-related conditions, as well as families and individuals affected by the conditions.

This 33-page scientific report summarizes the findings of the National Reading Panel, an independent panel formed by congress and led by the NICHD to evaluate evidence-based reading research in an effort to understand the best ways to teach reading. The National Reading Panel led to the Partnership for Reading, a collaborative effort by the National Institute for Literacy, the U.S. Department of Education, and the NICHD to bring the findings of evidence-based reading research to those with an interest in helping all people learn to read well.
