201501 Transition of HIV-Infected Adolescents from the Pediatric Care Setting to the Adult Care Setting

A request for applications (RFA) is proposed, entitled Transition of HIV-Infected Adolescents from the Pediatric Care Setting to the Adult Care Setting using the R01 Research Project and R21 Exploratory/Developmental Research grant mechanism.

Purpose

The purpose of this FOA will be to solicit applications (R01 and R21) on transition of HIV-infected youth to adult care with the goal to develop an evidence base to support guidelines applicable to low, middle, and high income countries.

Scope

Survival of perinatally HIV-infected youth into adulthood poses a new challenge of transition from the pediatric healthcare setting to the adult healthcare setting. This transition occurs during a dynamic developmental stage in which youth are establishing their identity and autonomy, mastering abstract thought, managing educational and employment challenges, and having intimate relationships. For HIV-infected youth, of course, this complex stage occurs in the context of HIV infection and often social and economic stress. This initiative will solicit studies that will expand the body of evidence needed to support and better inform guidelines and recommendations about how to manage and effect this transition to adult based healthcare.

Objective

This initiative is to solicit investigator-initiated research in assessment of transition of HIV-infected adolescents to the adult healthcare setting both domestically and globally. This area of investigation is neglected, profoundly understudied and of high importance.
