Shyamal D. Peddada, Ph.D., has been named the new chief of the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Branch of the Division of Intramural Population Health Research at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Dr. Peddada joins NICHD from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, where he served as Chair of the Department of Biostatistics.

Members of the branch conduct research in statistical theory and methods, developing quantitative procedures for research questions in the field of maternal and child health. The branch also provides statistical support for the design and conduct of clinical trials. In addition, branch members consult and collaborate with NICHD’s intramural and extramural scientists on statistical and mathematical problems. As chief, Dr. Peddada will provide leadership for branch members, create opportunities for trainees, and develop a research portfolio of his own.

In his previous position, Dr. Peddada worked to develop statistical methods applicable to the biomedical sciences, including studies of the microbiome, genomics, toxicology, and oscillatory systems, such as circadian rhythms.

Dr. Pedada obtained a Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1983.
