Purpose

NIH has a Special Interest Group (SIG) on Childhood Screening that is led jointly by representatives from NICHD and ODP in the Office of the NIH Director. After some discussions, SIG members decided that the group would focus activities on improving the evidence base for pediatric screening recommendations, starting with an in-person meeting on methods.

The goal of this workshop was to stimulate methodological innovation in evaluating the impact of screening on childhood health outcomes. Workshop objectives included:

  • Conceptualizing the universe of child health outcomes pertinent to screening
  • Identifying methodological challenges in evaluating child health outcomes
  • Discussing novel and rigorous approaches to evaluating child health outcomes
  • Considering next steps for moving the research field forward
