Pharmacotherapy of Epilepsy in Children

Purpose

This presentation will focus on the current approach to treating pediatric epilepsy in children, with specific attention to the key clinical pharmacology issues of antiepileptic medication selection and management in children.

Presenter Tracy Glauser, M.D., will address the following objectives:

  • Describe the classification of seizure types and epilepsy syndromes and its effect on medication selection for children with epilepsy.
  • Understand the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic variability associated with antiepileptic medications.
  • Understand the importance of clinical pharmacology in medication management and ultimate outcome.

Dr. Glauser is a professor of pediatrics and neurology, director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, and co-founder of the Genetic Pharmacology Service at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
