Purpose

NICHD is hosting a special lecture series on disabilities, featuring Sir Tom Shakespeare , professor of disability research at Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia. In the first of two lectures, Dr. Shakespeare will discuss sexual and reproductive health in persons with disabilities.

Dr. Shakespeare has a B.A., MPhil, and Ph.D. in social sciences from the University of Cambridge. His doctorate research explored conceptualizations of disability. His subsequent research projects at the Universities of Sunderland, Leeds, and Newcastle explored the sexual rights of disabled people, childhood disability, and quality of life in restricted growth. He has published extensively in disability studies, including Disability Rights and Wrongs (2006), The Sexual Politics of Disability (1996), and Genetic Politics: from Eugenics to Genome (2002). Dr. Shakespeare served at the World Health Organization for 5 years, where he co-authored the World Report on Disability (2011) and the United Nations statement on forced, coerced, and otherwise involuntary sterilization (2014). He is a member of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics and chaired the working party which produced the recent report on non-invasive prenatal diagnosis. He is also part of a Hastings Center project on the future of prenatal diagnosis.
