Program seeks Council approval for the initiative titled, HIV Pediatric, Adolescent and Maternal Clinical Trials. The Maternal and Pediatric Infectious Disease Branch (MPIDB) develops, implements, and directs a wide range of domestic and international research activities for the study of the epidemiology, diagnosis, clinical manifestations, pathogenesis, transmission, treatment, and prevention of HIV and its complications in infants, children, adolescents and pregnant women. Because of the unique aspects of HIV in pediatric and maternal populations, a specific clinical trials network is needed to develop and conduct innovative research with a focused impact on improving the long-term health of populations affected by and living with HIV. The evaluation of new and improved prevention and treatment modalities for HIV, and its associated complications, comorbidities and coinfections in children, adolescents, young adults and pregnant women is integral for lifelong health. This network will encompass innovative approaches to address ongoing public health issues with investigative leadership, operations and data coordination, cost-effectiveness, and clinical trial site consortiums. The site consortiums and infrastructure supported by this network will also engage in collaborations and studies with other HIV and relevant infectious disease clinical studies, as well as new partnerships, ensuring the improvement of health of all pediatric and maternal populations.
This proposed concept aligns with the NICHD Strategic Plan Themes 2, 3, 4, and 5, as well as several Cross-Cutting areas.
This proposed concept aligns with the NICHD MPIDB research priorities in HIV and Emerging/Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases, as well as the Office of AIDS Research HIV/AIDS priorities.
