Dr. Lisa Halvorson: Hello, my name is Lisa Halvorson. I'm chief of the Gynecologic Health and Disease Branch at NICHD. So, I think there are a number of excellent reasons to apply to NICHD or to NIH more broadly for funding.

|Camera view of Dr. Halvorson.||Dr. Halvorson: So, we support early stage investigators, or ESIs, in a number of ways. One of these is by providing grants, which start with pre-doctoral applicants, then transition to post-docs, and ultimately, faculty members. These begin with training programs, and then career development programs. Just to get you a little comfortable with the lingo, training programs start with an “F” or a “T,” and career development programs start with a “K.”|

These include the R03 small research grants, the R21 exploratory grants, and the R01, generally considered the bread and butter funding mechanism for independent investigators. Although NICHD no longer has a strict pay line for these “R” grants, we do take ESI status into account when making funding decisions. NICHD also supports junior investigators through loan repayment programs.|

Check out these slide presentations and review the NIH websites. Reach out to people in your institutions and here at NICHD. We can make sure that your scientific ideas are sound and that you are applying to the right grant mechanism. With perseverance and hard work, you are on your way to a research career. Best of luck!|
