Dr. Porter: My name is Forbes Porter. I’m a senior investigator and clinical director in NICHD/NIH.
Camera view of Dr. Porter. Dr. Porter: Today, I will be talking about opportunities for research, and in particular, clinical research.
Camera view of Dr. Porter. Dr. Porter: The NIH Clinical Center is the largest research hospital in the world. One-hundred percent of the patients that are admitted to the hospital are on research study protocols, so our entire focus, although we can provide clinical care, our entire focus is on research and advancing clinical science.
Camera view of Dr. Porter. Dr. Porter: When you train at a university, you are well-versed in what exists in the extramural environment. That is 90 percent of what the NIH funds. It is your typical R01 grants, your U01 grants, your training grants. The intramural program is different. We do not depend on grants. That gives you flexibility to develop a long-term, high-risk project.
Camera view of Dr. Porter. Dr. Porter: You can design programs without having the preliminary information or preliminary data that it would normally take to get a grant. What we are evaluated on is if we have a good idea, and we execute that idea. So, it is a very different concept. It is designed to promote science that is complementary to extramural grant-driven science.
Camera view of Dr. Porter. Dr. Porter: There are multiple positions for individuals at various levels to engage in clinical research at the NIH in the intramural program.
Camera view of Dr. Porter. Dr. Porter: If you would like more information about the various opportunities that are available in the intramural research program, please feel free to look at my talk, where I explain in more detail the various positions that are available and the potential opportunities that are available at the NIH Clinical Center, or also collaborations between the NIH Clinical Center, the intramural program, and researchers in the extramural program.
