202405 Contraceptive Development Research Centers

Program seeks Council support for an initiative titled “Contraceptive Development Research Centers.” As the outcome from Public Health Law, 103-43, the goal of this initiative is to facilitate the development of new and/or improved contraceptives.

This initiative seeks to address the ongoing high unintended pregnancy rate and the growing call by the public for better, safer contraceptive options for men and women. Many women are unsatisfied with their current contraceptive options. Options for men have been limited to withdrawal, condom, and vasectomy for over a century.

In the last cycle of this initiative, 3 centers were awarded. The outcomes of these awards include clinical advancement (phase 2a) for one recipient and signing co-development agreement with pharmaceutical company for another recipient.

This opportunity will align well with NICHD’s Vision for reproductive health (Theme 2) and safe and effective therapeutics (Theme 5).  Also, this initiative aligns with the Contraception Research Branch priorities for developing new and improved contraceptives and supporting market and behavioral research informing contraceptive development.

Program priority will be used to prioritize applications that propose Investigational New Drug applications, clinical trials, the development of on-demand products, multipurpose prevention technologies (a contraceptive with anti-infective properties; e.g., HIV) and applications that have industry support.
