In 1990, the NICHD convened a workshop on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), which at the time was a new, highly invasive therapy for infants with cardiorespiratory failure, with support from the NIH Office of Medical Applications of Research, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. This 93-page report describes the workshop and the topics discussed, including prevention and therapeutic alternatives, research, and other considerations.
