Valerie Cotton is the program manager for the NIH Common Fund’s Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Research Program (Kids First). She joined NICHD in October 2015, working under program staff to coordinate the Kids First Working Group and related initiatives. She is closely involved with the Kids First sequencing program and the Kids First Data Resource Center, facilitating communications among awardees and colleagues at the many institutes and centers associated with this trans-NIH program. She also works with the National Cancer Institute’s Office of Data Sharing to communicate, educate, and promote compliance with the NIH Genomic Data Sharing Policy among Kids First investigators.
Ms. Cotton earned her B.Sc. in neuroscience from McGill University and spent several years researching the impact of yoga on the brain and responses to pain during undergraduate studies and as a postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award fellow at the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. She also spent a year teaching community-based sexual health education in rural Utah and 2 years serving in AmeriCorps, where she helped communities respond to Superstorm Sandy.
