Joanna Kubler-Kielb, Ph.D., became chief of SRB in 2023 after serving as acting chief since 2022. She joined the branch in 2013 as a scientific review officer (SRO) and has since managed two study sections and conducted many special emphasis panel initial peer reviews. She also served on NIH’s Review User Group and NICHD’s internal workgroup on clinical trials, and as a mentor to new SROs.
Before joining SRB, Dr. Kubler-Kielb was a staff scientist in the Program in Developmental and Molecular Immunity, within NICHD’s Division of Intramural Research. Her research in the program focused on structural design and immunological properties of pediatric antimicrobial subunit vaccines intended to prevent bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections from malaria, pertussis, shigella, borrelia, anthrax, and influenza.
Dr. Kubler-Kielb graduated from Wrocław University of Science and Technology in Poland with an M.Sc. degree in engineering and biotechnology and received her Ph.D. in glycobiology and D.Sc. degree for independent research in vaccine development from the Ludwik Hirszfeld Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Science. She is the lead inventor on numerous patents and has authored many peer-reviewed publications, review articles, and book chapters. She is also a member of the steering committee for NIH’s GlycoBiology Scientific Interest Group.
