Chemical Screening and Optimization Facility

Program is seeking Council approval for an initiative entitled “Chemical Screening and Optimization Facility.” This initiative aims to provide investigators with access to a cutting-edge facility equipped to support research in the development of non-hormonal contraceptives, contraceptives with anti-infective properties (such as those targeting HIV), and broader reproductive health research endeavors. The facility offers a comprehensive suite of services, including protein expression, X-ray crystallography, high-throughput screening, structure-activity relationship analysis, and production of scalable quantities of research materials. The primary objective is to foster the entry of new investigators into these critical fields by generating preliminary data, as well as to support experienced researchers through bridging studies. Notably, eligibility for these services is not contingent upon current funding status, thereby promoting equitable access and encouraging innovation across all stages of scientific inquiry.

This initiative is a direct response to the ongoing public demand for innovative and safer non-hormonal contraceptives, as well as reproductive health therapies that can be utilized throughout the reproductive lifespan. Program is committed to advancing this mission by continuously supporting research and development in these critical areas, ensuring sustained progress and accessibility for diverse populations.

During the previous cycle, the facility provided a range of specialized services to both junior and senior investigators. These included chemical optimization, production of substantial quantities of research materials such as recombinant DNA, X-Ray crystallography studies, high-throughput screening, and synthesis of multi-gram amounts of selected small molecules. The support offered through these services directly facilitated the submission of R43 grant applications and contributed to the successful awarding of R01 and P50 grants, underscoring the facility's pivotal role in advancing research and fostering scientific progress.

This concept clearance is in alignment with the NICHD Strategic Plan (Advancing gynecologic, andrologic, and reproductive health, Theme 2; Safe and effective therapeutics, Theme 4) and the Fertility and Infertility Branch’s branch priority for the development of new and improved contraceptives.

Concerning alignment with HIV/AIDS priorities- unknown. It is conceivable that a service request discussing a multipurpose prevention technology (e.g., a contraceptive with an anti-HIV property) could be received.
