What is pregnancy loss/miscarriage?

A miscarriage, also called pregnancy loss or spontaneous abortion, is the unexpected loss of a fetus before the 20th week of pregnancy, or gestation. (Gestation is the period of pregnancy from conception to birth.) The loss of a pregnancy after the 20th week of gestation is called a stillbirth and can occur before or during delivery.1
