Dr. Michael Cashel is the Head of the Section on Molecular Regulation in the Division of Developmental Biology, NICHD. He has an M.D. from Case Western Reserve University (1963) with Dr. Frederic Robbins, which was followed by two year postdoctoral (1965) at NIH in the US Public Health Service with Dr. Ernst Freese. He obtained a USPHS out-of-service training award to join the Department of Genetics at the University of Washington with Dr. Jonathan Gallant (PhD, 1967). He returned to NIH for 3 years in the PHS and then transferred to NICHD his own lab, pursuing a research career focus on the molecular biological mechanisms of bacterial physiological responses to stress.
