This research plan outlines areas of and directions for research for the NICHD National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research. In April 2003, the NICHD, the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health, and the NIH Office of Rare Diseases held a workshop on vulvodynia (defined as chronic vulvar discomfort characterizes by complaints of burning, stinging, irritation, and rawness) and related pain syndromes. This 40-page report describes the workshop and the topics discussed, including epidemiology, areas for discovery, basic science, the science of pain, and therapies and therapeutics. The NICHD National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services convened a panel of experts to help develop a research agenda on appropriate settings for providing rehabilitation care to patients in six categories total joint replacement, pulmonary and cardiac rehabilitation, cancer and transplant rehabilitation, back surgery rehabilitation, hip fracture rehabilitation, and chronic pain.
