This fact sheet describes the NICHD's Human Placenta Project, a research effort aimed at understanding the placenta. The Project aims to develop tools and methods to safely study the placenta in real-time to learn more about this link between mother and fetus. Findings from the Human Placenta Project could enable health care providers to fix problems with the placenta before they negatively affect a pregnancy.

This 80-page scientific plan outlines Down syndrome research goals and objectives for the NIH Institutes, including the NICHD, which support and conduct research related to Down syndrome and its associated disorders. The NICHD and two other federal agencies jointly organized a National Symposium on Learning Disabilities in English Language Learners, October 14-15, 2003, with the goal of determining how best to apply knowledge about identifying and assessing learning disabilities in native English-speaking students to the identification and assessment of learning disabilities in ELL students. In addition, symposium participants discussed ways to distinguish between actual learning disabilities and the challenges associated with learning a new language. The National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research (NCMRR) within the NICHD led the development of this trans-NIH research plan on rehabilitation. This 5-year plan lays out priorities in medical rehabilitation research that will guide NIH support for rehabilitation medicine and will benefit individuals with temporary or chronic limitations in physical, cognitive, or sensory function that require rehabilitation.

In October 2000, the NICHD was involved in an NIH Consensus Development Conference on PKU, metabolic disorder that, if left untreated, can lead to irreversible mental retardation. This 338-page scientific report describes the conference and the topics discussed at the conference, including responsible assessment of currently available data about screening for and management of PKU.
