NICHD’s Division of Intramural Population Health Research today announced the appointment of Dr. Stephen E. Gilman as the new Acting Chief of the Health Behavior Branch (HBB)

HBB designs and conducts research to identify determinants of health behavior and to test educational, behavioral, and environmental strategies for improving or protecting maternal, child, and adolescent health.

Dr. Gilman comes to the NICHD from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where he was an associate professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Department of Epidemiology. He earned his Sc.D. in health and social behavior from the Harvard School of Public Health and completed his post-doctoral training in behavioral medicine with the Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine at Brown Medical School.

Dr. Gilman’s research addresses the developmental origins of health inequalities and aims to identify intervention targets during childhood that could reduce inequalities over the course of life. Among his primary interests are common mental disorders, including mood and substance use disorders that often begin in childhood.

As Acting Chief, Dr. Gilman will lead HBB, developing training opportunities and designing his own program of research. His appointment begins on April 13, 2015.
