Enrique F. Schisterman, Ph.D., is a senior investigator and chief of the Epidemiology Branch. He earned both his master's degree in Statistics and his doctorate degree in Epidemiology from the State University of New York, Buffalo. Overall, his research interests focus on epidemiological methods and reproductive epidemiology. Resulting from his multidisciplinary training in the complementary fields of statistics and epidemiology, Dr. Schisterman’s work focuses on both methodological components of exposure assessment, particularly the use of biomarkers, and the etiologic study of reproduction, including randomized trials of low cost interventions to improve reproductive function. Dr. Schisterman completed both the BioCycle Study, a prospective observational study to assess the relationships between endogenous hormones and biomarkers of oxidative stress as well as numerous other biomarkers across the menstrual cycle, and the EAGeR Trial, a randomized clinical trial designed to investigate the effects of low-dose aspirin therapy on pregnancy incidence, live birth, and other outcomes in women with a previous pregnancy loss. Further, Dr. Schisterman implemented the ongoing FASZT trial to determine if folate/zinc supplementation improves semen quality and outcomes among couples seeking infertility treatment. However, etiological research is not without methodological constraints. To this end, Dr. Schisterman utilizes experience from his and others’ etiologic work to fuel new methodological development, with the ultimate goal of improving study designs and solving analytic challenges. He has contributed substantially to developing new methods within domains ranging from pooling biomarkers to evaluate exposures to collinearity in causal inference frameworks. Dr. Schisterman received a highly competitive extramural grant from the American Chemistry Council to support methods development research, including training support for pre- and post-doctoral fellows. Dr. Schisterman is the recipient of multiple mentoring and research awards and currently one of the editors of the American Journal of Epidemiology.
