Steven C. Kaufman, M.D., M.S., came to the NICHD from the FDA’s Office of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in 1992. He is now in the Contraceptive Discovery and Development Branch (CDDB), where he has served as either Project Officer or Medical Officer for contracts dealing with male condoms, vasectomy, tubal sterilization, infertility, and peri/postmenopausal gonadotropin levels and a cooperative agreement dealing with microbicide development.
He coordinates the CDDB’s investigator-initiated grant portfolio, providing guidance to grant applicants and CDDB staff about funding opportunities and the grant application and review process as well as handling awarded grants and advising Branch members concerning their RFAs and PAs.
He also coordinates all of NICHD’s Extramural Loan Repayment Programs, namely those for Contraception and Infertility Research, Clinical Researchers, and Pediatric Research.
Dr. Kaufman has been invited to make presentations at national scientific meetings on grantsmanship and to represent NICHD at two Expert Consultations on Vasectomy Effectiveness convened by FHI 360. His publications have dealt with topics such as the limitations of Follicle Stimulating Hormone in assessing menopausal status, regret after vasectomy and tubal sterilization, and the evidence concerning post tubal ligation syndrome.
