Overview

The Office of Education was established in September 2004 to support the training needs of intramural scientists, fellows, and students at all levels. The office provides academic support programs, mentorship, career guidance, and evaluation. Those who join the NICHD Division of Intramural Research (DIR) have a wealth of resources and support through the Office of Education.

The Office of Education serves about 300 trainees, including postdoctoral, visiting, and research fellows; clinical fellows and medical students; graduate students; and postbaccalaureate and technical fellows. Activities include (but are not limited to):

  • Public-speaking and job-interviewing workshops
  • Writing and editorial services
  • Grantsmanship
  • Career counseling
  • Teaching opportunities
  • Workshops on teaching skills
  • Management programs
  • Networking functions for fellows and alumni

Additional benefits of the NICHD DIR include international exchanges for the training of graduate students, the enhancement of fellows' competitiveness for awards, a monthly newsletter created for and by the NICHD fellow community, and support for new tenure-track investigators.

Each spring, the NICHD DIR hosts a retreat for about 100 fellows and graduate students to address scientific developments and careers. The agenda includes renowned keynote speakers, presentations by fellows, alumni from a diverse set of careers in science, and poster sessions. The entire program is developed and run by a fellow/student steering committee under the guidance of the Office of Education.
