Shyamal Peddada, Ph.D., is a senior investigator and chief of the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Branch (BBB). He leads the branch activities to develop broadly applicable statistical methods motivated by applications in biomedical sciences, such as microbiome, genomics, and toxicology; and oscillatory systems, such as circadian clock and cell-cycle. An important feature of BBB’s methods is accounting for the underlying structure or constraints in the scientific problem that leads to efficient methodology for designing and analyzing studies. Not only do these methods help answer the relevant scientific question, but extensive simulation studies also demonstrate that these methods are substantially more powerful than standard methods. He also leads BBB’s efforts to collaborate extensively with researchers on a wide range of projects, often using the methods developed by BBB. Some major areas of collaborative research include study of fibroid growth in premenopausal women, infant gut microbiome, effects of chemical exposures on human microbiome, and toxicology.
Prior to joining NICHD in 2020, Dr. Peddada was a professor and chair of the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Biostatistics in the Graduate School of Public Health. He has published numerous papers on statistical theory, methodology, and applications, and has lectured extensively within his fields of expertise.
Dr. Peddada earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Delhi, a master’s degree from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi, and a master’s and doctoral degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He is an American Statistical Association (ASA) fellow and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, and has received numerous awards throughout his career, including ASA’s Outstanding Statistical Application Award, the Indian Society of Agricultural Statistics' P.V. Sukhatme Gold Medal, and an Excellence in Teaching nomination from Central Michigan University.
Dr. Peddada currently works with BBB fellow Huang Lin, Ph.D.
