Robert F. Tamburro, M.D., M.Sc., is a pediatric intensive care and hospice and palliative care medicine physician who joined the NICHD in June 2014. He graduated from the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in 1986 and completed his pediatric critical care medicine training at LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, in 1992. He has worked clinically in the field since then and continues to do so to date. He also received board certification in hospice and palliative care medicine in 2008.

Dr. Tamburro is a medical officer for the Pediatric Trauma and Critical Illness Branch at the NICHD. In this role, he serves as the project scientist for the Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network. He also oversees the pediatric critical care medicine, pathophysiology, and management of critical illness portfolio, which focuses on the following project areas:  

  • Physiology/pathophysiology of critical illness
  • Biomarkers related to critical illness
  • Medical and pharmacological management of critical illness
  • Pediatric surgery and surgical intervention
  • Anesthesia
  • Remote monitoring/telemedicine
  • Statistical modeling studies of critical illness
  • Medical devices
  • Conditions of particular interest:
    • Multiple organ dysfunction
    • Sepsis
    • Acute, severe traumatic brain injury
    • Serious life-threatening injury
    • Acute lung injury
    • Critical illness in children with complex, chronic conditions
