Factors in Teratogenesis: to assess adverse genetic and/or environmental influences on development and to arrive at mechanisms by which developmental aberrations are produced
This program focuses on the etiology, molecular pathogenesis, and epidemiology of structural birth defects with a major emphasis on elucidating the underlying mechanisms of teratogenesis. Physical and chemical teratogens being studied include therapeutic and over-the-counter drugs and environmental chemicals. This program supports investigations aimed at identifying and characterizing adverse genetic and/or environmental influences on development and clarifying the mechanisms that produce developmental aberrations. Development and use of animal models in which such teratogenic defects occur or can be induced are also of interest as are studies with human subjects on risk factors associated with the formation of structural birth defects.
