Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

The Branch’s goals within this program area include: (1) the promotion of research on the prevention of STIs in the context of new and existing contraceptive methods, and (2) the development of new MPTs (multipurpose prevention technologies) that prevent both unintended pregnancy and transmission of STIs by:

  • Evaluating hormonal and barrier contraceptive methods for their effects in preventing or enhancing heterosexual STI/HIV transmission
  • Evaluating the safety and efficacy of contraceptives related to their impact on HIV transmission and acquisition
