Program seeks Council approval for an initiative titled "Zika in Infants and Pregnancy study." This initiative aims to extend the follow-up of mothers and infants currently being enrolled in the first international cohort study of Zika in pregnancy.
The current prospective study is identifying a cohort of pregnant women in the first trimester and will follow them through pregnancy, delivery, and six weeks postpartum. It will provide insight into the timing of infection in pregnancy, the transmission risk to the fetus, the severity and full spectrum of infant outcomes.
The purpose of this proposed initiative is to provide additional support for an extended follow-up over the first three years of life of the infants born to the Zika Cohort. This extended follow up will permit researchers to determine: the full spectrum of outcomes, short-term and long-term sequelae of the infection; allow for additional sub-studies for mothers and infants; and allow for new investigators with appropriate expertise to become involved in the cohort study. In addition, this will permit NICHD to implement any prevention or treatment strategies that may be developed in the interim.
This proposed concept aligns with the NICHD Vision areas of Developmental Origins of Health and Disease and Reproduction.
