201610 The female HIV/AIDS Cohort Study

The Maternal and Pediatric Infectious Disease Branch is proposing a FY18 initiative, "The female HIV/AIDS Cohort Study (FHACS).

Currently, NICHD supports the Pediatric HIV/AIDS Cohort Study (PHACS) which includes over 3000 women of child bearing age (plus ~250 new enrollees every year). The focus of PHACS is to study the long term safety of in utero exposure to anti-retrovirals.

NICHD is seeking to leverage this cohort and to launch a more intensive study of the caregivers of the PHACS cohort. This new study will focus on the mother's natural history, reproductive and general health status after HIV diagnosis and treatment. This new Female HIV/AIDS Cohort Study (FHACS) will thereby establish a cohort of younger women with HIV that can be synergized with the next cycle of Woman's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS), a prospective cohort study designed to investigate the progression of HIV disease in women.
