A Request for Applications (RFA) is proposed entitled “Learning Disabilities Research Centers.” This proposed RFA will use the NIH Specialized Research Center (P50) grant mechanism.
Purpose
The purpose of the proposed RFA is to stimulate transdisciplinary research examining issues related to etiology, classification and definition of, and prevention and remediation of learning disabilities impacting listening, speaking, reading, writing and mathematics with an emphasis on comorbid conditions.
Scope
The proposed scope of the RFA anticipates richly integrative, multi-method approaches to examining research topics focusing on learning disabilities that are simply not feasible through standard research mechanisms and are of high public health import. These centers would serve as rich environments for project-centered mentorship of the next generation of scholars and disseminate information on the state of the science in the field of learning disabilities.
Objectives
The continuation of the Learning Disabilities Research Centers would improve classification models for learning disabilities, improve understanding of the genetic and neurobiological foundations of learning disabilities, enhance dissemination of translational research to researcher and practitioner audiences, enrich the pool of next generation scholars prepared to conduct team-based science and increase the research data directly relevant to highly diverse populations.
