201501 Neurodevelopmental Assessment of Infants and Children in Resource-Limited Settings (R41/R42) (R43/R44)

A request for applications (RFA) with set aside is proposed, entitled Neurodevelopmental Assessment of Infants and Children in Resource-Limited Settings using the R41/R42 (STTR) and R43/R44 (SBIR) Small Business grant mechanisms. Collaborating Branches include Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Branch and Child Development and Behavior Branch.

Purpose

This initiative will provide support for research focused on the development of tools and/or materials for neurodevelopmental assessment of cognitive functioning of infants and children in resource-limited settings. Neuropsychological assessment of cognitive functioning often requires multiple testing sessions with the child, and feedback from the parent and school (when applicable). Such assessments are usually administered by highly-trained staff (e.g., doctorate degree professional or a neuropsychologist), who are not often available or affordable in RLS. This FOA would specifically encourage small businesses (independently or with significant academic research involvement) to develop neurocognitive measurements, tools, and materials to be applied in RLS.

Scope

This initiative seeks applications that include the investigation or adaptation of non-invasive screening approaches and/or assessment of infant/child cognitive development. It is particularly important that any approaches and materials proposed for investigation be culturally relevant and appropriate for implementation in RLS.

Objectives

The objective of this RFA is to support much-needed research through the SBIR/STTR mechanisms focused on the neurodevelopmental assessment of cognitive functioning of infants and children in RLS.
