201401 Reducing HIV Risk Behaviors in Individuals who Experienced Childhood Maltreatment

A request for applications (RFA) with set aside is proposed, entitled “Reducing HIV Risk Behaviors in Individuals who Experienced Childhood Maltreatment” using the R21 Exploratory/Developmental Research grant mechanism.

Purpose

The purpose of this RFA is to reduce the risk of HIV acquisition by soliciting research that will 1) examine pathways between early childhood maltreatment and health risking behaviors and 2) identify efficacious prevention programs. Basic science studies of self-efficacy, self-regulation, emotion regulation, reward systems, etc. will be encouraged along with studies to adapt existing HIV prevention programs for this specific subpopulation of individuals who were maltreated during childhood and are at elevated risk of becoming HIV positive.

Scope

Basic science studies of mechanisms linking early maltreatment with subsequent health risking behaviors will be solicited. Likewise, feasibility and early efficacy studies of HIV prevention programs designed or adapted for maltreated youth will be encouraged.

Objective

The objectives of this RFA are to understand why maltreated youth are at higher risk of HIV acquisition through sexual behavior or substance use, and to identify efficacy prevention programs designed for this specific population of maltreated youth.
