NICHD scientific research planning aims to ensure that the Institute's research portfolio is fully responsive to emerging, important scientific opportunities and public health needs within its research mission.
The Institute and its components rely on multiple processes to identify promising areas of research and critical gaps in scientific knowledge, to then help inform future research directions for the scientific community and the Institute.
NICHD Scientific Vision
The NICHD Scientific Vision: The Next Decade was created in collaboration with Institute colleagues in the research, health care provider, and public policy, public health, and advocacy communities following an in-depth discussions to identify the most promising scientific opportunities of the next decade across the breadth of the NICHD mission. The Vision sets an ambitious research agenda not only for the NICHD, but also for the Institute’s collaborators and stakeholders. The Vision will help inform an Institute-wide strategic planning process, which will commence early in 2013. Strategic Planning and Research Activities
The following items resulted from previous strategic planning efforts and describe the Institute's research activities:
- Strategic Plans and Other Research Plans
These strategic plans describe the results of the Institute's previous strategic planning efforts on selected scientific topics. The NICHD is currently in the early stages of another Institute-wide strategic planning process; results from that activity will be posted on this website when completed. In addition, the NICHD leads and participates in trans-NIH planning efforts for coordinated research on specific topics. Links to these research plans are also available through the above link.
- Reports to the National Advisory Child Health and Human Development (NACHHD) Council
Until 2010, NICHD research components submitted printed reports describing their activities to NACHHD Council every 4 years. The link above lists reports from the last cycle of this reporting process. The reports are provided for reference only. Please note that the NICHD recently reorganized its components to better align with its scientific activities; as a result, the names in the titles and content of these reports to Council may not correspond to current component names.
- Division of Intramural Research (DIR) Annual Reports
The Institute's DIR produces an annual report on its activities to inform its Board of Scientific Counselors and other audiences about its research activities.
