Dr. Yvonne Maddox: Coming to NICHD I was a little bit out of my element, so it really did require a lot of learning. And it was the staff that really gave me the opportunity to learn because, you know, oftentimes when you come into a position like this people expect you to know everything, and particularly if you have a large staff that you're expecting to manage. I could have easily gotten off to a terrible footing because people would have expected me to know more than I actually knew, but again I get back to the Ruth Kirschstein influence. She told me that you come on board, you're honest and you're transparent and you build these teams. Well, I did that, so the teams wanted to share and they wanted to be a part of my learning process. So we learned together. There was a lot of learning here at NICHD that occurred during my tenure and certainly during my early years that I did with the staff.
