Longitudinal Study of Vaginal Flora
The goal of this prospective observational study is to advance knowledge of the natural history and abnormal alteration in vaginal microbial flora and to identify risk factors associated with these changes. Over the course of 1 year, more than 3,000 nonpregnant women underwent quarterly visits that included laboratory tests to quantify vaginal microbial flora and to identify infection of bacterial vaginosis, routine gynecological exams, limited cultures, and detailed questioning regarding a variety of behavioral factors.
