Sleep: NICHD Research Information

The NICHD supports several areas of sleep research in order to understand the process of sleep and identify ways to treat sleep disorders and the conditions associated with inadequate sleep. Supported research studies focus on characterizing the biological processes that occur during sleep, studying the role of the biological clock and circadian rhythms in controlling sleep, examining how a lack of sleep affects people, and evaluating how certain illnesses, disorders, and other conditions disrupt sleep.
