  • Effectiveness and Safety of Vitamin D in Relation to Bone Health.
    An extensive report of the Agency for Healthcare and Research Quality in which a team of investigators reviewed a variety of Vitamin D research projects—specifically 25 (OH)D studies—including the latter’s effect on bone mineral density and subsequent fall/fracture risk, potential harm of above-recommended levels, and specific bone health outcomes in various populations, including children, postmenopausal women, and elderly men.
  • Hypoparathyroidism in the Adult.
    A report from the 2009 Workshop on Hypoparathyroidism that explored epidemiology, genetics, diagnosis, pathophysiology, target-organ involvement, treatment, and challenges for future research.
  • PTH Replacement Therapy of Hypoparathyroidism.
    A recent study found that continuous parathyroid hormone replacement therapy (PTH-RT) increased the levels of bone markers into the normal range without the side effects of the traditional method of once- or twice-daily injections.
  • Study of Once Versus Twice-Daily PTH Therapy.
    An NICHD study in 2008 found that twice-daily injections in children with hypoparathyroidism was more effective than one dose as it reduced variation in serum calcium levels at a lower total daily dose.
  • Medical and Surgical Therapeutic Options for Postoperative Hypoparathyroidism.
    This report from 2009 recognized the importance of emerging PTH replacement therapy strategies as alternatives to the standard vitamin D and calcium supplementation.
