The NIH maintains the ClinicalTrials.gov website as the main database of clinical trials. Each trial has its own pre-defined research plan—called a protocol—a specific goal or goals, and specific requirements for being eligible to take part. Visit the About clinical trials section of this website for more specific information about clinical trials.

The NIH clinical trials database includes studies that are looking for participants, in progress but not looking for participants, stopped, or completed.

The NICHD requires that all of its clinical studies be included in the NIH clinical trials database. The NICHD-supported clinical trials link lists all NICHD studies on the ClinicalTrials.gov website.

To search the NIH clinical trials database on your own, visit http://clinicaltrials.gov.
