The NICHD uses a variety of funding mechanisms to support research at other institutions, organizations, and facilities.

Research Grant (R) Mechanisms

R01 Research Project Grant
R03 Small Research Grant
  • Supports small investigator-initiated research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources on a topic within the Areas of Research Supported by NICHD.
  • Examples include pilot or feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology and/or development of new research technology.

R13 Conference Grant
  • Provides limited support for scientific meetings, workshops, symposia, and conferences within the Areas of Research Supported by NICHD.
  • Applicants must obtain NICHD's approval prior to submission (see announcement).
  • In the cover letter, applicants should request secondary assignments from other NIH Institutes and Centers with programmatic interest in the conference.
  • In general, the NICHD awards up to $6,000 for grants with primary assignment to NICHD and up to $3,000 for grants with secondary assignment to NICHD.

R15 NIH Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA)
R21 Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Award
  • Provides limited support for exploratory/developmental research projects that introduce novel scientific ideas, model systems, tools, agents, targets, and/or technologies.
  • High-risk/high-payoff research is encouraged.
  • Preliminary data is helpful but not required.

R24 Resource-Related Research Projects
  • Provides research infrastructure support.
  • The NICHD does not accept unsolicited R24 applications at this time.
  • Active announcements will be listed on the Active Funding Opportunity Announcements page.
R30 Education Project
R34 NIH Clinical Trial Planning Grant Program
  • R34s support the planning of Phase III clinical trials, including activities such as the establishment of the research team, the development of tools for data management, and the finalization of the protocol.
  • At the present time, the Parent R34 Announcement (PA-09-186) has expired and has not been re-issued.  However, NICHD is participating in the following Funding Opportunity Announcement: PA-11-283, "Psychosocial/Behavioral Interventions and Services Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders (R34)" http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-11-283.html

U01 Research Cooperative Agreement
U10 Cooperative Clinical Research
  • Support clinical evaluation of methods of therapy and/or prevention using a cooperative agreement.
  • NICHD accepts U10 applications only in response to active RFAs. Check the Active Funding Opportunity Announcements page for NICHD active U10 RFAs.
U13 Cooperative Conference Grant/Conference Grant
  • Similar to R13s but involve NICHD program staff in a substantial scientific and management role.
  • Provides limited support for scientific meetings, workshops, symposia, and conferences within Areas of Research Supported by NICHD.
  • Applicants must obtain NICHD's approval prior to submission.
  • In general, the NICHD awards up to $6,000 for grants with primary assignment to NICHD and up to $3,000 for grants with secondary assignment to NICHD.
  • Only U.S. institutions or organizations, including an established scientific or professional society, are eligible to apply.
