Estella Parrott, M.D., M.P.H., joined the staff of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institutes of Health in 1998. She was recently appointed to the newly established Gynecologic Health and Disease Branch as a Medical Officer. Her previous assignments were with the Contraception and Reproductive Health Branch, and the Reproductive Sciences Branch. Her current responsibilities include providing technical leadership, guidance and management of a portfolio of research grants that focus on the physiology and pathophysiology of human female reproduction and benign gynecologic diseases. Examples of research topic areas covered by this portfolio include disorders of the menstrual cycle, chronic pelvic pain, and vulvodynia. Research initiatives that are important to quality of life issues across the reproductive life span in women encompass pelvic floor disorders, endometriosis, and uterine fibroids. Special emphasis areas include reproductive concerns at the perimenopause and menopause transition, adolescent gynecology, and disparities in the incidence of gynecologic disorders across underserved populations. An important focus of the portfolio is to promote the independent careers of physician-scientists who can address research opportunities relevant to women’s reproductive health. A native of New York City, Dr. Parrott obtained an undergraduate degree in biology from the City College of New York. Before embarking on a medical career, she earned a master’s degree from the University of Chicago, and taught biology to high school and college students for several years. Dr. Parrott received a degree in medicine from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, followed by a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She also secured a master’s degree in public health from the George Washington University. Dr. Parrott has held other federal government positions with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Health Resources and Services Administration. Her medical career spans former affiliations with private, State and County public health agencies, where she supported and strengthened the delivery of quality health care services to women in diverse practice settings.
