Biosketch:

Dr. Igor B. Dawid is a Senior Investigator in the Program in Genomics of Differentiation in the Division of Intramural Research of the NICHD. His laboratory studies molecular mechanisms of early embryonic development in the frog Xenopus laevis and the zebrafish Danio rerio. Dr. Dawid has pursued this general direction of interest since 1962, and has contributed to the understanding of differential gene expression in embryos, and on the role of homeodomain transcription factors and signaling pathways in development. Recent studies have focused on the regulation of neural crest formation, and on the role of protein stability in patterning the embryo.

Dr. Dawid received his Ph. D. from the University of Vienna, Austria, and came to the NICHD after research appointments at MIT and at the Carnegie Institution for Science. At NICHD he has been Chief of the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics 1982-2010, Acting Scientific Director 1998-2000, and Head of the Program in Genomics of Differentiation 2007-2010. Dr. Dawid served the scientific community in various capacities including Editor-in Chief of Developmental Biology and Chair of the Editorial Board of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Among other honors he is a recipient of honorary doctoral degrees from the University of Lausanne and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Society for Developmental Biology, and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
