About DESPR
The Division of Epidemiology, Statistics, and Prevention Research has had a longstanding presence within the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institutes of Health. The Division first appeared on the NICHD's organizational chart in 1967, only five years after the establishment of the Institute. The Division was first established as the Epidemiology and Biometry Branch, and was later renamed the Epidemiology and Biometry Research Program in 1970, then the Division of Prevention Research in 1990, and finally the the Division of Epidemiology, Statistics, and Prevention Research in 1991. Dr. Heinz Berendes served as the Division's first director, followed by Dr. Mark Klebanoff from 1999 through 2008. In 2008, Dr. Germaine M. Buck Louis assumed leadership.
