Air Quality and Reproductive Health - Consortium on Safe Labor
Air pollution exposure during pregnancy has been associated with increased infant mortality, preterm delivery and restricted fetal growth. We use the Community-Multiscale Air Model (CMAQ) to determine exposure for criteria air pollutants including PM2.5 and ozone as well as over 30 air toxics, temperature and relative humidity to examine birth outcome risks in the Consortium on Safe Labor. Nearly 230,000 deliveries from 12 clinical centers across the United States have regional air pollution exposure assigned by CMAQ as well as using other air pollution modeling strategies based on monitor data. Exposure models will be completed in 2013.
