Reproductive Medicine-Gynecology

This program area, directed by Dr. Estella Parrott, supports research and research training and career development opportunities focused on the physiology and pathophysiology of human female reproduction including the etiology, prevention, and treatment aspects of benign gynecological diseases and disorders and other aspects of reproductive health. Basic, translational, and clinical studies in this portfolio address female reproductive tract development and regulation. Examples of research topic areas covered by this Program include disorders of the menstrual cycle, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, leiomyomata uteri (uterine fibroids) and female sexual function and dysfunction. Special emphasis areas include reproductive concerns at the perimenopause and menopause transition, chronic pelvic pain, adolescent gynecology, and disparities in the incidence of gynecological diseases and disorders across various socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic populations. Ongoing initiatives that are important to quality of life issues across the reproductive life span in women continue in the areas of basic research on pelvic floor disorders and vulvodynia. Clinical studies and clinical trials investigating safety and efficacy of treatment and management strategies of gynecological conditions are focal points of this portfolio.
